Thank God It’s Sunday (T.G.I.S.), last week was filled with a lot of great memories and this week will bring many more. Yesterday I spent quit some time in Boarders reading skimming through a lot of leadership books, why? Well, in order to create something bigger than yourself you are going to need other people to get involved. Secondly, those people are going to need leadership so that the task at hand can be completed. As history has shown us, anytime a large amount of people got together to do something great, there was always a leader in the mist of things. So why is this important?

Since most of us (me included) desire to accomplish something great, we are going to need leadership characteristics. This brings us to an important question, what is a leader? This question can be answered in so many ways but simply put, a leader is a person who takes the responsibility of leadership. Thinking back to high school when we read about Julius Caesar, I remember saying to myself that this guy exemplified leadership. Most military leaders during Julius Caesar’s era lead from the back of their military force. The idea was, in the case of a battle the leader will be protected and won’t be the first to die. Julius Caesar understood true leadership, so he lead his army from the front.

This type of front leadership gave Julius Caesar’s military force the confidence they needed to become  one of the greatest military forces in history. Part of their confidence came from the fact that they knew Julius Caesar was not telling ( or going to tell) them something that he wasn’t willing to do himself.

Most people think they can lead from the back, but sorry, leadership is a front row-front-center mentality. You’ve got to be the first one at the post and the last one to leave. You’ve got to be willing to give it everything you’ve got even when your followers are giving up. You’ve got to be more passionate about the cause then anyone else. You’ve got to take responsibility…that’s what a leader does, that’s who a leader is.
